How it works.

Step 1
1

Build the catalog

Define every skill you care about, by category, with descriptions and a 5-level scale. Soft-delete keeps the audit trail clean as your business evolves.

Step 2
2

Assign & rate

Map employees to the skills they hold, with proficiency level and an acquired date. The matrix view updates instantly so you can see your full talent picture, by department or skill.

Step 3
3

Connect & close gaps

Tag training to skills, tag review competencies to skills, then export to Excel. Every completion and every review keeps your matrix evergreen, no manual updates.

Your skills matrix is the single source of truth, fed by training completions and review ratings, exportable to Excel for the boardroom, audit-trailed for HR. No more spreadsheets.

  • How does the 5-level proficiency scale work?
Default scale: 1 = Awareness, 2 = Novice, 3 = Working Knowledge, 4 = Proficient, 5 = Expert. You can rename or extend the scale per skill if your business uses a different framework (e.g., DACUM levels). The matrix view colors cells from light to dark based on level.
  • Can the skills matrix scale to 500+ employees?
Yes. The matrix uses server-side pagination (50 employees per page) plus search by name/employee number and filters by department or specific skill. You can also export the full matrix to Excel for offline analysis.
  • How does training feed into the skills matrix?
When you create a course in Training & Development, you can tag the skills it builds. On completion, employee proficiency on those skills auto-increments (governed by a per-skill config). The new ratings show up live in the matrix and feed the next performance review.
  • How do skills connect to performance reviews?
During review setup, each competency on the review form can reference a specific skill in your catalog. The reviewer's rating flows back into the employee's skill profile with an effective date equal to the review cycle end date, so the matrix always reflects the most recent calibrated assessment.
  • Can I export the matrix to Excel?
Yes, one click. The Excel export has rows = employees, columns = skills, cell value = proficiency level. Headers include department and position so you can pivot, sort, and conditional-format in Excel for talent reviews and upskilling roadmaps.
  • What if I delete a skill that employees are already rated on?
Skills are soft-deleted. The skill is hidden from the active catalog so no new assignments can be created, but all existing employee ratings are preserved for historical accuracy and audit trails. You can restore a soft-deleted skill anytime.
